The inquest into the death of Annie Catherine Chatten, the infant daughter of James and Mary Chatten was held at the Coffee House, Carleton Rode, on Thursday 17th September 1908. The child was the youngest of five and had been born the previous December. The body had been discovered in her cot by Mr. Chatten early in the morning of Tuesday 15th September, her throat had been cut. Mrs Chatten was later discovered partly submerged in the well, wearing a nightdress and one stocking. A pair of baby's socks were in her hand. She was recovered from the well and admitted that she had killed the child with a razor.
At the inquest the jury did not believe Mrs. Chatten was in a sound state of mind when she committed the act and found that the child came to her death by shock consequent upon a wound in her neck. They also found that Mary Chatten had feloniously and wilfully murdered her child.
Mid Sussex Times 22 September 1908 Before returning a verdict of "Wilful murder in the case of Mary Chatten, wife of an innkeeper near Wymondham, Norfolk, who cut her infant's throat and jumped down a well but failed to kill herself, the jury went into the bedroom, where she confessed her story.
